Ancient Lato

Only a 20-minute drive from NIKO Seaside Resort (approx. 11 km away), visit the archaeological site of Lato to experience a major piece in the history of Crete. Lato is one of the most important city-states of Dorians and is considered the most well-preserved settlement of the classical Hellenistic period with its ruins mainly dating from the 4th century BC. Built between two hills, in a strategic defensive position overlooking the Mirabello Bay, its name derived from Leto (Doric type of Lato), the mother of Apollo and Artemis. Ancient Lato was destroyed about 200 BC.
