Kritsa Village
Just a 15-minute drive from NIKO Seaside Resort, Kritsa is amphitheatrically built on the slopes of a green hill at an altitude of 375 metres and is one of the most picturesque villages where the ancient craft has been kept alive. Don’t miss out on the delicacies prepared by the local women association. There are still many traditional kafenions (Greek cafés) and tavernas as well as a few old fashioned bakeries serving traditional Cretan “dakos” baked in the wood oven.
The beautiful church of Panagia Kera (Holy Virgin) is located next to Kritsa village, a three-aisled church with a dome containing the finest preserved Byzantine-era frescoes in Crete that were painted on the walls and vaulted roofs in the 14th and 15th century. The village is inextricably linked to the famous Cretan diet as a leading producer of the renowned Kritsa olive oil, treasured for its health benefits and nutritional value. The olive groves of the region are among the oldest in Crete and are situated on the hill of Kritsa extending from Mirabello Bay to a height of 700 metres.
